facilities and resources Clondalkin Library provide for Children with ASD

MEETING OF CLONDALKIN AREA COMMITTEE Wednesday, October 21, 2015 QUESTION NO. 11 QUESTION: Councillor F. Timmons “To ask what facilities and resources Clondalkin Library provide for Children with ASD ? REPLY: The Library in Clondalkin offers a variety of services to all children which include story time, arts and crafts and general festival events. While Clondalkin Library doesn’t provide any special events for children with ASD, as each child on the autism spectrum has unique abilities, symptoms, and challenges, we do have a large selection of children’s books in large print and CD audio to suit children with learning and reading difficulties. Pre-loaded, portable audio books which operate like an MP3 player are also available for children. For older children we have special software on our computers such as zoomtext and Kurzweil which gives the ability to scan a printed document and explore the content through synthetic speech. These can be used by anyone with a visual impairment, dyslexia or general reading difficulties. Staff are trained in various aspects of disability awareness, and place a high importance on excellent customer service. They are always willing to assist library patrons obtain the best from the library service, which would include information on specific services available in the wider community.
