Cllr Francis Timmons – Independent Voice

homeless in Hotels

MEETING OF ORGANISATION PROCEDURE AND FINANCE COMMITTEE

QUESTION NO. 15

QUESTION: Councillor F. Timmons

To ask the Chief Executive to provide a report into the cost of Providing accommodation for homeless in Hotels and give a numbers for each hotel and breakdown of costs?

REPLY:

South Dublin County Council’s Homeless Services Unit currently has 45 families placed into hotel accommodation across the Dublin region.  Every family placed into private emergency accommodation (including hotels) are referred to the Focus Ireland New Presenters Team for initial assessment and care planning to identify all housing options available and support families out of homeless services.

It is not possible to advise regarding the length of time a family may be placed into hotel accommodation.  Hotel placements are a last resort and not sustainable for long periods of time. When a more suitable placement becomes available within emergency accommodation, every effort is made to transfer families from hotels.

Expenditure in relation to all emergency accommodation is managed by Dublin City Council as the lead authority and South Dublin County Council pays a contribution in respect of all expenditure on homeless services.

It is also not possible to give numbers in hotels or indeed hotels themselves because they change from day to day.
