Cllr Francis Timmons – Independent Voice

Newcastle – Safety

MEETING OF CLONDALKIN AREA COMMITTEE

Wednesday, November 18, 2015

MOTION NO. 1

MOTION: Councillor F. Timmons

Cathaoirleach’s Business

“That this committee asks SDCC for a full road and pedestrian safety audit to be carried out in the Newcastle area as a matter of urgency and any actions deemed necessary be carried out as a matter of urgency.”

REPORT:

Safety for pedestrians and motorists in the Newcastle area is of ongoing concern to SDCC. A variety of measures has or will shortly be undertaken to enhance road safety.

  • The pedestrian lights at St Finian’s School have recently been activated. A set down area for school traffic has been provided off Main Street at the new school.
  • The pedestrian lights at each approach to the roundabout on Main Street and the traffic lights (including pedestrian facilities) at the Aylmer Road/Main Street junction will be made operational in early December following ongoing engagement with the developer responsible for providing them.
  • The Road Safety Officer is examining measures to improve safety on the Peamount Road in relation to students going to and from school.
  • Additional traffic calming measures will shortly be installed at Peamount Healthcare. An extension of the 50 kph speed limit (with additional public lighting and traffic calming) further towards Newcastle is also being considered for 2016.

As part of the Villages Iniative being undertaken by the Architects Department the following measures are planned:

Additional footpaths on Aylmer Road (tenders currently being sought).

A “Village Gateway” scheme.

Additional paving/pedestrian area in the vicinity of the Main Street/Peamount Road junction.

In addition to existing measures all of these will enhance road safety generally and in particular safety for pedestrians.

If the Councillor wishes to bring attention to any other specific issues, they will be examined.
