MEETING OF CLONDALKIN AREA COMMITTEE

MOTION NO. 7

MOTION: Councillor F. Timmons

“That this area committe agrees that any future development of the Grand Canal environs includes the restoration of the Omar’s Lock House at the Grand Canal tenth lock as well as the restoration of other structures and features associated with the Canal and to ensure proper usage of such structures, as heritage-related amenities.”

REPORT:

Omer Lock House which is located at the 11th Lock is a former Lock Keeper’s House which is a Protected Structure under Schedule 2, County Development Plan 2010-2016, RPS Ref. 122. There are also a number of other structures associated with the Canal including canal Lock and industrial buildings most of which are located at the 12th Lock all of which are listed on the Record of Protected Structures and are therefore afforded protection under Part IV of the Planning and Development Act 2000. The restoration and re-use of these structures are encouraged and would be looked upon favourably by the Planning Authority. However, the structures are in private ownership so until such time the owners of these structures have an overall plan which would include a suitable use the Planning Authority will continue to ensure the structures and all associated features which are included on the Record of Protected Structures are safeguarded.
