MOTION NO. 26

MOTION: Councillor F. Timmons

Cathaoirleach’s Business

“That this committee recognises the local importance of St Finnian’s Well in Newcastle and ask that the Chief Executive gives a report on St Finian’s Well, what efforts have been made to enhance and preserve the well and when will a sign be erected?”

REPORT:

St. Finian’s Well is a Protected Structure under Schedule 2 of the County Development Plan 2010-2016 RPS Ref. 243. The well, which is not in Council ownership, is made up of a stone plinth and opening, the structure is understated and is a simple holy well which holds local historical and social importance. Works were previously completed during 2006 to provide a gravel pathway to the site and to make the site more visible and accessible to local residents who visit the site especially during religious events. The structure is not under threat and is in good condition therefore no interventions are required to the structure at this time.

No applications have been received for the erection/purchase of a sign through Community Services. The new LEADER Programme will be launched later this year, and a local community group may very well be able to apply for funding under the Programme subject to the criteria of the new LEADER Programme when it’s formally launched.
